In today’s digital era, your personal data is more valuable than gold. Yet, many mobile apps and companies continuously track our online behavior to serve personalized ads based on what we browse, search, and shop for. While these ads might seem convenient, this constant tracking can compromise your privacy, exposing your data to third parties who analyze it for their own profit.
To give users more control over their privacy, Apple introduced the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature with the release of iOS 14.5 in April 2021. First announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2020, this groundbreaking privacy tool requires apps to ask for your permission before tracking your activity across other apps and websites.
Apple has continued to enhance its privacy features with each update, empowering iPhone users to decide how much of their data they want to share. Turning off app tracking is quick and easy:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Go to Privacy & Security.
- Select Tracking.
- Toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
Once disabled, apps will no longer have access to your advertising identifiers or other tracking data. You may still see ads, but they will be generic rather than based on your personal browsing history, meaning you won’t keep seeing that same watch you searched for last week following you around online. With privacy becoming a growing concern, Apple’s commitment to giving users greater control over their data is a welcome change. As technology evolves, we can expect even stronger privacy features to help safeguard our digital lives in the future.
